Lapis lazuli, or lapis for short, has a long and rich history. Known as the queen's stone for its association with Cleopatra, lapis has long been admired and adored. Cleopatra famously wore ground lapis as her signature eye look, believing it brought her insight, power and timeless beauty. It adorns King Tut's funerary mask where lapis rings encircle the eyes- its power was thought to be all-seeing and all-knowing here and in the afterlife.

Incredibly, lapis and its rich blue pigment ultramarine was so prized that the great Michelangelo demanded it be used in the Sistine Chapel for creating the blues of heaven, where only the best of the best Afghani stones were acquired, the dazzling blue more precious than gold at the time. For Renaissance artists, their obsession with lapis and its lavish pigment was that it was not just another pigment; it was the pigment. The Dutch painter Vermeer sent his family broke from his incessant use of ultramarine, most notably in his posthumous masterpiece, the girl with the pearl earring and as a result, died penniless.
